Mannheim, 2026 – Virtualbadge.io is among the roughly 120 companies that have now signed the "Memorandum of Understanding for the Successful Introduction of the EUDI Wallet" together with the digital association Bitkom and the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and State Modernization (BMDS). The initiative was signed at the European Summit on Digital Sovereignty in November 2025 by Federal Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger and Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst, together with more than 75 co-signing companies. On January 23, 2026, the initiative passed the 100-signatory mark.

By signing the memorandum, participating companies commit to swiftly adapting their processes to use the EUDI Wallet. In return, the Digital Ministry incorporates feedback from businesses into the implementation process, while Bitkom organizes and expands the dialogue between the digital economy and policymakers.

‍

‍Implementation status

The EUDI Wallet will go live in Germany on January 2, 2027. Until then, a sandbox phase is underway in which companies are testing concrete use cases:

  • Since December 15, 2025, use cases involving the identification function (PID) have been tested.
  • By March 2026, 150 use cases had already been submitted, 53 of them registered for the sandbox, and 5 successfully implemented, supported by 13 active technology partners.
  • Since April 2026, Electronic Attestations of Attributes (EAAs) can also be tested. A format for digital credentials that is also relevant to the education sector. ‍

Why Virtualbadge.io is participating

By signing, Virtualbadge.io aims to ensure that education and training credentials are considered a highly relevant use case within the emerging EUDI ecosystem, with regard to issuance, verification, revocation, and cross-border recognition.
